Hands Up for Community Banking

At the last Rotary Club meeting the initiator fora local branch of the Bendigo Community Bank,Mr. Noel Lewls, answered questions from the Rotarians and other interested people regarding the requirements of setting up a Branch of this Community Bank at Lightning Ridge.

Mr. Brown has now already received pledges from local residents for several thousand dollars towards the deposit required for that purpose.

At the same time, the Lightning Ridge Rotary Club has also been approached by sources. within the Walgett Shire and Bourke Councils to inform them of the imminent application by the Barwon Darling Alliance,to establish a new community owned Barwon Darling Credit Union.

This Alliance was formed in 1997 and is a joint initiative of the Bourke, Brewarrina, Central Darling,Coonamble and Walgett Shire Councils, and the Murdi Paaki ATSIC Regional Council. The combined area of these Shires covers approximately 43% of NSW.

The writer of this article has spoken at length with the principal of the Consultancy Company employed by the Barwon Darling Alliance, the Australian Commercial Marketing C. to help us further clarify our stand in regards to community banking in general, and he will be addressing our Rotary Club on this matter as soon as practicable.

As the concern of the Rotary Club is to ensure the continuity of proper banking facilities being available for our Lightning Ridge community, we will be keeping you informed of further developments. Community banking certainly is an exciting and viable concept and we are happy to be involved.

The Rotary Club meets every Monday evening at7pm at the Restaurant of the Motor Village. Visitors are always sincerely welcome.

Herman Kreller, Publicity.
