Ten arrested in Castlereagh L.A.C. Drug Operation

Ten people have been arrested across the Castlereagh Local Area Command following a drug operation, culminating in their arrests on Thursday and Friday, July 26 and 27 2001.

Police from "Operation Tasman", a joint team consisting of Detectives and General Duties Officers from across the Castlereagh Local Area Command, Corrective Services Dog Drug Detection Unit, Western Region Target Action Group and other specialist officers, arrested the ten offenders after executing a number of Search Warrants within Walgett and Lightning Ridge.

"These arrests following two months of outstanding work by the 'Operation Tasman' team, in gathering intelligence and conducting investigations specifically targeting the distribution of prohibited drugs, including Cannabis and Amphetamine, within the Walgett and Lightning Ridge areas," Superintendent Tony Jefferson, Castlereagh Local Area Commander, said.

The subsequent result of this operation has substantially diminished the availability of prohibited drugs within the Castlereagh Local Area Command. Eight of the ten persons arrested have been granted bail and will appear before Lightning Ridge and Walgett Local Courts in August. Two persons were refused bail. Those arrested included a number of Walgett and Lightning Ridge residents, both male and female. Some of the thirty charges laid include: supply and possess prohibited drug (Cannabis and Amphetamine), knowingly take part in supply of prohibited drug (Amphetamine), possess prohibited drug, possess prohibited weapon and other firearm offences.

The success of this operation has also reaffirmed the link between the use/purchase/sale of prohibited drugs and other crime categories, including stealing and break and enter offences. Intelligence gained during the operation, relative to the rural cultivation and distribution of prohibited drugs, will be the subject of continued investigation by "Operation Tasman".
