"Gaining third placing in the National Awards for Excellence in Organisational Management has been an exceptional honour for Barriekneal Housing Ltd," said newly appointed Chairperson, Trina Brown. The achievements of this locally based company which was formed in 1979 have been well documented, however this most recent honour, competing against mainstream national companies, is perhaps their most prestigious achievement.

The Awards were open to all non-government and local organisations and fell into six categories. To enter the National Award for Excellence in Organisational Management, Barriekneal Housing needed to demonstrate that they met the criteria of achieving - active tenant participation in all aspects of their organisation; a culture of planning evaluation and service development; highly developed and effective organisational systems (including documented policies and procedures that reflect best practise); a positive work environment for paid workers and volunteers and a sustained benefit to tenants and the local community.

Their application was evaluated by a panel of nine judges including government officers provider representatives, tenant representatives and independent experts. On October 9, Barriekneal received notification that they had been short-listed and were asked to attend the Awards Presentation Dinner in the Grand Chelsea Ballroom, of the Mescure Hotel, Brisbane.

Sickness prevented Barriekneal's Housing Officer, Barbara Cook, attending on their behalf. Two hundred housing company representatives from throughout Australia attended the dinner to hear the announcement of category winners.

Barriekneal chairperson, Trina Brown, accompanied by Bev Manton, Manager Employment and Development, represented the company at the dinner and were elated at the announcement that they had received third place in the National Awards for Excellence in the Organisational Management category.

The Awards presentation night preceded the National Housing Conference held next day.
