A successful year for UHA committee

The United Hospital Auxiliary culminated a successful year of fundraising with a great Christmas break-up and presentation of Awards.

With a target of $100,000 towards hospital equipment this dynamic committee, who have already clocked up $30,000, have a lengthy list of fundraising activities planned for 2002.

Committee Chairman, John O'Dwyer, made recognition of the continued and extensive support given by Kath Simpson "Queen of the Ticketsellers". Kath is seen in strategic positions selling for her favourite cause, the UHA.

Along the way there are many businesses and individuals who are assisting the Auxiliary in achieving their goal.

Those commended for their assistance were Lightning Ridge Bowling Club, Walgett Shire Council the Black Opal Advocate, Opal FM, David, Adam and Tony Webb, Duncans Fashions, Supersave, "Monster" (Mark Spillett), Soroptimists, Gwen Smith, Tom and Chris Urquart, Ridge News, IGA Khans, Mr Cheap, Andrews Meat Service, Lightning Ridge Hotel Market Group, SES, Diggers Rest, Opal Cave, Westpac, Lightning Ridge Funeral Service and Lightning Ridge Hotel Motel.

A pastel painting by Gwen Smith will be the first item to be donated towards the new hospital. "We want the hospital staff to have the very best equipment available," said President, John O'Dwyer.

"If extra dollars means this can be achieved then we will do our best to top up what is being provided."

This band of volunteers are truly worthy of recognition in this International Year of the Volunteer.
