Peak National Body sought for Opal Industry

Good things are emerging from the South Australian initiated ACCC investigation into opal prices. The report compiled by the Northern Regional Development Board claimed prices offered to prospectors were being forced down by buyers.

We first brought the story to you in July this year.

The report identified major factors impacting upon reduced performance with a secondary component recommending a marketing strategy for the industry.

Today the Northern Regional Development Board is part of a force which is moving towards establishing a peak body at a national level to further address the problems identified.

A whole of industry strategy will be developed and considerable discussion has evolved to promote education and training via a National Training Package expected early in 2002.

The Australian Jewellery and Gemstone Industry Association are involved in these discussions. Editor's Note: Achieving a delicate balance will be the groups toughest challenge.
